PVCS board sifts through year-end figures

SOUTH DAYTON - The end of another school year brings with it plenty of figures. The Pine Valley School Board received a fair share of them at its recent meeting, with a focus on Regents scores, summer program participation and general data.

According to high school principal Cathy Fabiatos, the percentages of students passing June 2009 Regents exams increased in all subjects; some with significant jumps in success. All participating students passed the Regents exams in English (up from 60 percent in 2008), Living Environment (up from 90 percent), Chemistry (up from 46 percent), U.S. History (up from 95 percent) and Spanish (up from 82 percent).

At least 93 percent of students passed in all subjects with the exception of Physics, in which 44 percent passed (five of nine students who took the exam). This figure was still up from 38 percent in 2008.

Attendance figures were also provided for the new 2009 Summer Enrichment Program, a series of educational workshops and projects students have been able to sign up to participate in. Organizer Sonja VanSlambrouck said the first week of programs had a high attendance of 100 and first-day attendance of 71.

"The numbers have been really impressive," VanSlambrouck said. "The kids have been really good. We haven't had any major issues at all, really; it's been really peaceful."

Director of Student Services Amy O'Brien provided the school board with the latest figures on enrollment. The school district serves 702 students, with the elementary building (grades K-6) containing 375 students and the jr./sr. high school (7-12) containing 327 students.

The district's overall free/reduced lunch rate is 52 percent, with 60 percent of elementary building students and 43 percent of jr./sr. high building students eligible. These numbers were looked at favorably by the school board, as the number of eligible students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch programs has an effect on state funding and efforts have been made to ensure parents of eligible students signed their children up.

As of Feb. 1, 170 students, or 2 percent, were classified as requiring Academic Intervention Services.

In other matters:

A motion was approved to accept no new tuition students to the school. Tuition students currently attending Pine Valley will remain enrolled.

Jessica Cannon was appointed as an English/foreign language curriculum coordinator.

Mark Mansfield was appointed as a volunteer softball coach.

Agreements with Physical Therapist Joanne Arnold, Physical Therapist Jacquelyn Smuda and Occupational Therapy and Hand Rehabilitation Services were approved.

A collective negotiations agreement between the school district and the Pine Valley CSEA was approved.

A total of 70 Math A and 37 Math B textbooks were approved for disposal. The textbooks are copyright 2002, but are reportedly obsolete in light of changing state math education organization.
