4-H members show their talents

Monday evening's 4-H activities provided entertainment in the Warren K. Brown Show arena and at the Budweiser Grandstands.

In the livestock arena, 4-H hog project participants were "squealing" with joy as they participated in Swine Market, Breeding and Showmanship Classes.

Warren Beehler judged the market and breeding classes on breed standards, finish and quality and the showmanship classes on handling and presentation.

The Showmanship classes consisted of six divisions. Senior Intermediate, being the most experienced showman, ended with Cody Styers in first and Garrett Hanson in second. In the Senior Novice division, first went to Tony Paterniti and second went to Beth Paterniti.

Among the Junior Intermediate showmanship class, Maria Childs took first and Jacob Short took second. Following the Junior Intermediate was the Junior Novice which was won by Madison Styers in first and Jade Walsh in second.

For the first-year senior showman Colleen Yaw was in first and Holly Lehman in second, Lastly was the first-year junior showman class, in first was Michael Kibbe and in second was Braden Lesch.

Earning the division champion and reserve titles also won the participants entrance in the Champion Showmen class. Tony Paterniti earned the Grand Champion Showman title for 2009. Reserve Grand Champion went to Beth Paterniti.

Following the showmanship class was the market hog show. The market classes are divided into weight classes. The first weight class was the 220-225 pound class which was won by Makayla Keefe and followed by Katie Jackson in second.

Next was the 226-240 pound class in first was Matt Morrison and in second was Beth Paterniti. After that was the 241-245 pound class which was Mark Ecklund in first and Jacob Short in second. The 246-248 pound class followed with Louis Smith in first and Branden Decker in second. Next was the 249-253 pound class which was won by Rachel Ecklund and in second was Beth Paterniti.

The 254-259 class followed and that was Michael Kibbe in first and Sarah Gibson in second. The second to last class with 260-263 pound hogs was won by Brandon Decker with Makayla Keefe earning second place. The last class was the heaviest hogs with a weight range of 264-270 pounds. Patrick Kibbe took first and Sarah Gibson took second.

Champion and Reserve Market Hogs from each weight class compete Grand Champion Market Hog title. Michael Kibbe won this honor and Mark Ecklund received the Reserve Grand Champion award. 4-H market hog winners earned more than ribbons and trophies.

The placings help 4-H members earn a sale position in the Meat Animal Sale scheduled for Friday at noon. Grand and reserve market animals earn the first and second slots in the Hog portion of the Meat Animal Sale.

Other 4-H members who have multiple animals in the 4-H market hog project are required to sell only their top placing animal. 4-H hog project members work many hours preparing their animals for show and sale.

4-H dog program participants entertained crowds of fairgoers as they performed in the County Fair Budweiser Grandstand.

Dog Agility and Rally Obedience participants were judged by Sue DiBianca and Noel Naska. The 4-H dogs and participants perform many exciting and demanding tasks together. Some dog competitions even show participants working in teams.

The Agility class had a variety of entries. The Open Class, which is off-lead and has the two hardest obstacles, weave poles and the teeter, first place went to Cassandra Skal. The Novice Class, which is also off- lead, First Place went to Sarah Einhouse. The Pre-Novice Class, which is also off-lead but does not have the harder obstacles in it, First Place went to Mandy Swanson. All of those classes are eligible to go to state fair.

The on lead classes are Pre-Novice non state fair, First Place went to Tessa Gibons, with Noah Coffaro coming in Second, followed by Samantha Cole in Third, and Rachel Vaillancourt coming in Fourth. The Puppy Class is on lead and for first-year dogs that are puppies and are too young to use the agility equipment at the normal height. First Place went to Sofia Rater, with Elise Schack in Second, followed by Emily Norton in Third, and Hillary Norton in fourth.

The Rally-Obedience half of the show also went very well. In the Excellent Class which is off-lead and has the hardest of the rally signs and a jump in the course, First Place went to Sarah Einhouse, with Mandy Swanson in second, and Ben Swanson with Fourth.

In the Advanced Class, which is also off-lead and has most of the hard signs and a jump, First Place went to Ben Swanson. In the Novice B Class, which is on lead First Place went to Hillary Hornyack, with Tessa Gibbons in Second, followed by Noah Coffaro in Third, and Danielle Yotopolis. In the Novice A Class, which is also on lead, First Place went to Rachel Vaillancourt, with Samantha Cole in Second, followed by Alexandria Anderson in Third, and Elise Schack in Fourth.

A Dairy Fitting contest, judged by Morgan Oag Walker was also held as 4-H members raced against the clock and themselves to groom a Dairy cow for show. The contest calls for teams of two to prepare the animal for the show ring.

Working in teams of one junior one senior member top placing was received by Nick Yotopolis and Clarke Wiltsie. Second place team members were Justin Dye and Glen Moss Jr. Coming in third place were T. J. Beckerink and Andy Miller. Fourth Place team members were Ben Dye and Roberta Starceski. Fifth Place team members were Emily Knight and Makenzie Miller. Sixth Place team members were Kelsey Neckers, and Joyce Wiltsie. Seventh Place team members were Katrina Nickerson and Samantha Nickerson.

Longtime 4-H volunteer and Dairy Committee member Nick Frederes described the Dairy Fitting Contest as "seven bovine beauties spent a day at the spa."

In the 4-H Building, showcases of the projects created by talented 4-H members are on display all week.

Fair Board member Dave Wilson had the difficult task of judging each club display area.

The Silver Creek Grapestompers 4-H Club won the Division A Category, having 20 or more members, with the Sherman Country Kids taking 2nd, the Clymer Eager Beavers taking 3rd, and the Rock Freedom taking 4th.

In the smaller Division B Category for clubs having 11-19 members, the Fluvanna Farmyard Friends won first place, with Little Brokenstraws 2nd, the Levant Live Wirers 3rd, and the Paws 'n Pals 4th.

In the Division C Category for clubs with 5-10 members, the Country Critters won, while the Chautauqua County Snowdrifters received 2nd, the Frewsburg Hayseeders received 3rd, and the Biscuit Brigade and Adventurers received 4th.

The Goat barn was also full of activity as 4-H goat project members participated in the Harness and Pack Goat Show. Goats are an exceptionally hardy animal that can carry well above their own body weight.

The 2009 Grand Champion Harness Goat is Kate Ewer. The Reserve Grand Champion Harness Goat is Lynette Chase. The Grand Champion Pack Goat is Maria Childs. The Reserve Grand Champion Pack Goat is Lynette Chase. The Cloverbud Participants in the Goat Show were Rylynn Seeley, Cole Morrison, and Makayla Laroy.

The 4-H fun continued with a number contests and demonstrations in the Poultry and Goat barns, the Livestock arena, the 4-H building and at the county fair mini-stage. The Poultry barn competitions included poultry showmanship in which Rick Hare judging youth on the presentation of their birds and their knowledge of breed standards and bird raising.

Poultry Showmanship is divided into two divisions; juniors ages 8-13 and seniors ages 1419. Cloverbuds, 4-H members ages 5-8 are eligible to display birds and present their birds to the judges but are not evaluated for placing but are each recognized for their participation.

In the Junior Showmanship division Louis Smith placed first, Bryan Tenpas was second and Katelyn Tenpas and Brandon Baron tied for third. In the senior division Maggie Mason was first, Cassandra Chapman was second and Jacob Steinhoff was third.

During the showmanship contest 4-H poultry project participants got their own chance to 'be the judge' in the Poultry Judging Contest. In this contest project participants are assigned classes to watch and listen and then place. Scores are tallied based on the correlation of participant's choices and the professional judges' choice.

In the junior division for the Poultry judging contest Louis Smith was considered the best junior judge for placing each class closest to the professional judge's choices. Bryan Tenpas was second, Brandon Baron was third, and Joseph Thuman was fourth.

In the senior division of the poultry judging contest Maggie Mason earned first place, Cassandra Chapman was second and Jacob Steinhoff was third. 4-H Cloverbud poultry project members that participated today were: Jared Dorman and Tessa Warner.

The Warren K. Brown Show arena was busy again as the 4-H Beef Project participants gave it their all at the 4-H Market Steer and Beef Breeding Show, judged by Nate Keppler.

The 4-H beef program offers a market steer tract and a beef breeding tract. 4-H members can be part of one or both of these programs. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County's 4-H youth in the Beef Project have been gaining knowledge and raising animals since November in preparation for this year's County Fair.

The 4-H Beef barn is filled with beautifully finished livestock that all did very well in the competition. Rachel Ecklund received the high honors of Grand Champion Steer Showman. Along with winning Grand Champion Showman she won Grand Champion Market Steer as well.

Patrick Kibble did just as well following right behind with Reserve Champion Steer Showman and Reserve champion market steer. Sarah Osborne won Supreme Champion Female. Jacob Short followed with Reserve Champion Female.

Many other winners were found among the prize winning livestock. Grand Champion Heifer Showman went to Rachel Ecklund followed by Kaylee Sheldon as Reserve Champion Heifer Showman.

Among the market classes awards were given not just to Grand and Reserve but also to Highly Commended Market Steer going to Sarah Osborne, That was followed by Patrick Kibbe with a Commended Market Steer.

This year for the first time in history of the 4-H Beef Program one person won both Champion Showmanship classes and Grand Champion Steer.

Animals can be unpredictable, and steers in particular are more than 10 times the weight of their handlers. Congratulations to today's 4-H Beef show participants.

The titles help 4-H members earn a sale position in the Meat Animal Sale scheduled for Friday at noon.

The 4-H Building was very busy as county fair goers had a chance to participate in a number of youth and adult activities including enjoying the youth agricultural awareness area where youth can play in the "corn (sand) box."

4-H Youth Teen leaders help to engage fairgoers in 'green' activities such as creating crafts from recycled materials.

4-H members listed below also gave public presentations in the 4-H Building from on a variety of topics from swimming and softball to Pearl Harbor: Morgan Robbins. Sara Robbins, Stephanie Sorenson, Jack Penharlow, Holly Lehman, Brandon Baron, David Meizner, Kevin Rogers, Stephanie Rogers, Brandon Boyer, Matthew Overend, Matthew Walters, Melanie Walters, Mandy Swanson, Ashley Crandall.

4-H youth clothing and textiles project members took the opportunity today to show off their latest creations in the 4-H Youth Fashion Revue and Mannequin Modeling.

Tuesday's Fashion Revue participants: Lynette Chase, Kate Ewer, Morgan Robbins, Sara Robbins, Stephanie Sorenson, Emma Deckard, Maggie Jones, Taylor Rose- Newman, Victoria Beckerink, Emily Cherico, Alexis Scofield, Shelby Sek.

Tuesday's Mannequin Modeling participants: Morgan Robbins, Sara Robbins, Stephanie Sorenson, Emma Deckard, Maggie Jones, Gabriel Beckerink, Emily Cherico, Alexis Scofield, Taylor Rose-Newman.
