It feels like winter. It smells like winter. The local events calendars are practically bare and I'm hard-pressed to find much of anything appealing on the television listings. If I were to utilize my deductive reasoning skills, the only logical conclusion I can draw is that Old Man Winter is figuratively knocking at our collective door.
As of Wednesday evening, I even spotted a forecast for Saturday that included a slushy mix of rain and snow. It's time to grab your favorite drink and stay warm by the fireplace. Those of you who were looking to have as much fun as, say, Charlie Sheen at a fancy New York City hotel, might have a hard time doing so this weekend.

TCM is doing an homage to Fritz Lang Sunday with the original, groundbreaking “Metropolis” at 8 p.m. and the restored version at 10 p.m.
Southern Tier Brewery's Old Man Winter, recently released for the season. Be careful because it may knock your socks off. I urge anyone who is "out just for one beer" to heed this warning. Maybe it's just me but that 7.2 percent ABV snuck up on me it's just so delicious.

For film nerds
A rarely-seen movie starring Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow (just before the release of "Rosemary's Baby") and Robert Mitchum, "Secret Ceremony" (1968) will be on Turner Classic Movies on Friday night (or technically Saturday morning) at 2 a.m. I'm not saying it's good critics and fans largely hated it but the plot is (from TCM's brief description) "A tormented rich girl hires a prostitute to act as her mother." I'm in!
Also for film nerds, TCM is doing an homage to Fritz Lang on Sunday night with the original, groundbreaking "Metropolis" at 8 p.m. and the restored version at 10 p.m., followed by his "Spione" and "M."

GET OUT OF TOWN
The Failures' Union will be at the Mohawk Place in Buffalo on Friday night. The band's sound is a throwback to the days of 1990s indie rock and would appeal to fans of the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Buffalo Tom and Guided By Voices.
Also scheduled to play are Bedford Falls, Tuco and Go Glorious. The show starts at 9 p.m. and the cost is $6. The Mohawk Place is located at 47 E. Mohawk St. in Buffalo.

A former professor and I were discussing the appeal (or lack thereof) of teenage pop star Justin Bieber. When I mentioned that he bears a striking resemblance to a female, she introduced me to this website: lesbianswholooklikejustinbieber.tumblr.com/
Disclaimer: This is not an insult to lesbians, Justin Bieber or his fan base . It's just a highly amusing concept for a website.
