A small fire in downtown Ripley was quickly extinguished Friday night. Shortly before 9 p.m. a fire started in the basement of 100 West Main St., Ripley, an apartment house. It burned through a small section of the main floor but was quickly contained. Firefighters went from floor to floor in the three-story structure checking the walls to make sure the fire didn’t spread in the old structure.
According to Mark Smith, Ripley Fire Chief, “The fire appears to have started in the basement. We’re calling in the fire inspectors to determine the cause.”
Fire departments from Westfield and Mayville were put on stand-by. All Ripley trucks responded.
All residents were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. By 10 p.m. trucks were leaving the scene.
