Dunkirk Federated Seniors

The Dunkirk Federated Seniors met at the Dunkirk Senior Center at on Tuesday. Vice President Helen Barone led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "God Bless America."

A reading entitled "He Makes a Dark World Bright" was given by Chaplain Josie Wierczynski. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Wierczynski. They were accepted as read by Charlene Hallmark with a second by Ruth Mackowiak.

The treasurer's report was read by Treasurer Ruth Mackowiak. It was accepted as read by Marian Genovese with a second by Shirley Palmatier.

A get-well card was sent to Jim Griswold recuperating in Florida.

Attendance prizes were won by first, Josie Wierczynski; second, Shirley Palmatier and third, Betty Korzeniewski.

Helper of the day was Charlene Hallmark and others who assisted. The kitchen committee for Feb. 8 is Carrie Gawronski. A free lunch will be on Feb. 8 at 11:15 a.m. The menu is cabbage casserole.

Collins Center Seniors

COLLINS CENTER - There has been a time change for departure for the Seneca Niagara Casino trip Thursday, Feb. 10. The motor coach will start loading at 8:30 a.m. and depart from Gabels' parking lot at 8:45.

There are a few seats available for the Seneca Niagara Casino trip Tuesday, March 8. The group will depart at 8:45 a.m. and return at 4 p.m.

Other day trips scheduled: "Lord of the Dance" at Shea's Theatre March 19, with dinner at the Pearl Street Grill; the Polish Party in Erie, Pa., April 27; Mystery Tour May 24; matinee performance of "West Side Story" at Shea's Theatre June 12.

Two four-day trips are scheduled: Washington, D.C., May 6-9, guided city tours with stops at several points of interest; and June 5-8, "Head to the Shore," a trip to Atlantic City and Wildwood with guided tours of Cape May and Philadelphia.

The big trip for the year will be "Black Hills of South Dakota," Sept. 6-15, featuring Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorials and several other interesting stops on the way.

50-Plus Seniors

COLLINS - Location of free Income Tax Help offered by Don and Allison Girod regrettably has been moved to the Town of Collins Court Room at the Collins Town Hall, 14093 Mill Street, Collins. Change was necessitated by disconnection of Internet to the senior room at L. K. Painter Community Center. Dates remain the same: Feb. 10, Feb. 24, March 10, March 24 and April 7 with appointment hours scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Appointments are required and can only be made by calling the Girods at 257-3285.

"We have been extremely fortunate in having Don and Allison helping those living in the center's tri-county area obtain expert and free income tax assistance for many years at a convenient, easy to access location," Joan R. Byrne, senior program coordinator said in announcing the change. "I regret that the lack of Internet to the senior room was not made known to us prior to media announcement and distribution of flyers."

Registration is now open for the March 15 AARP Driving Course in the center's Lounge Room. AARP has shortened instruction time to six hours and for the first time the center will offer a one day instead of the familiar two day, eight hour course. Class begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m. with a 45 minute lunch break. The 50-Plus Senior Program will provide a lunch at a cost of $2.50, payable on the date of the class. Lunch reservations must be made at time of telephone registration for the course.

Cost of course is $12 for anyone with a valid AARP Membership Card and $14 for non members. Pre-registration is required and must be made by calling 532-2507. Callers are requested to have membership card available when calling. Payment is due within five days of receiving telephone confirmation of space availability and can only be made by check or money order payable to AARP. Cash is not acceptable. Payment is to be mailed to the Collins Town Hall, attention AARP, P.O. Box 420, Collins NY 1434.

Highlight to 50-Plus Senior activities for the coming week is the Tuesday Senior Soup and Sandwich Lunch on Feb. 8. Menu is chicken and rice soup, tuna sandwich, dessert and beverages. Cost is $2.50. Reservations are required and must be made no later than noon on Monday by calling 532-2006, Ext. 21. A sign up sheet is also available in the senior room during programming hours. Sequence Board Game and/or cards will follow. Regular 50-Plus Senior activities will also be held. A special Valentine Pot Luck Luncheon is set for Friday at noon in the senior room. Bring a dish to pass. Beverages and table service provided. Games will follow.

There are a few vacancies available for the April 3 matinee performance of "Sound of Music" at the Marvel Theatre, SUNY Fredonia. Cost is $25.50 for residents of the towns of Collins, Perrysburg and Persia and $27.50 for all others. Price includes a soup supper upon return to the center.

There are also several openings for the May 9 -11 motor coach trip to The Thousand Islands. The $319 cost based on double occupancy includes two nights accommodation at Captain Thomsons Resort located in downtown Alexandria Bay, two breakfasts, two dinners, all gratuities, narrated boat tour, admission to Boldt Castle and free time to do some shopping in this unique town. A $75 deposit is due with reservation and the first payment of $122 is due by Feb. 15. Final payment of $122 must be received by April 1.

Reservations are also being taken for the Saturday, March 26 trip to Ft. Erie Slots and lunch at Green Acres Restaurant, and the Sept. 18-22 trip to Wildwood, N.J. For reservations on all trips and for more information, call 532-2507. Sign up sheets and flyers are available in the senior room during regular senior programming. Payments for trips are to be made payable to Town of Collins and sent to Collins Town Hall, attention trips, P.O. Box 420, Collins NY 14034. Trip insurance for extended trips is available at the center.
