OLEAN - The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging announced today that it will be holding Mayors/Legislators For Meals Day as part of its March For Meals campaign. Mayors and legislators will be participating in the event to show their support for the community's seniors. In Gowanda, Deputy Mayor Carol Sheibly will be participating and in South Dayton, Legislator Paula Stockman and Mayor Karen Strickland.
"We are excited about having these mayors and legislators participating in our event. We hope to raise awareness and recruit as many people as we possibly can to join in the national movement to end senior hunger by 2020," said Cherianne Wold, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging.
March for Meals is a national campaign initiated by Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and encourage action on the part of the local community. Senior nutrition programs across the United States, like the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging's Meals on Wheels program, promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment, and fundraising initiatives. Mayors/Legislators For Meals Day is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local mayors and other local elected officials.
