Learn to Ski Registration Set October 26

The Gowanda Recreation "Learn To Ski" program at Holiday Valley will hold the first of two registrations Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the village board room located at 27 E. Main St.

A second registration will be held during the third week in November, but will include a $10 late fee by Holiday Valley.

To be eligible to attend the program, students must be grades 5-12 and reside in the Gowanda Central School District, regardless of which public or private school they attend. The cost for students that have their own equipment is $205. If a students needs to rent skis, the cost is $295. Those renting snowboards will pay $320.

The total cost includes bus transportation each week. Checks can made payable to: Gowanda Recreation.

MotoCross

Mapleshade MX in Sugar Grove, Pa. is running a makeup race this Sunday for both bikes and ATVs.

It will be a regular points race, starting at 10:30 a.m. Results from last Sunday's double points race and this Sunday's makeup race will be printed in Todd Langworthy's final Motocross News column Oct. 23. For more information visit www.mapleshademx.com.

Matteson-Kempo

Karate free program

Matteson Kempo Karate School and Family Video will be hosting a free annual youth recreation program to all Chautauqua County youth residence.

The classes are open to anyone ages 3-18 years old. A Little Dragon program is offered for ages 2 1/2-6 years old along with an MMA program.

This program will be held for two weeks allowing four weekly sessions. Sessions run from Oct. 10-22. Classes will be held at 355 Central Ave., Fredonia, located next to Family Video & D&F Plaza.

As a courtesy, Family Video has decided to partner with the program and offer a free five night new release and older rental upon registration.

For kids ages 6 and up , karate is available Mondays and Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 6 to 6:50 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. For those ages 12 and up, MMA classes are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. And for The Lil Dragons (ages 2 1/2-6), Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 6:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 to 11:45 a.m.

Kids Night Out

The Fredonia State women's soccer and lacrosse team will hold a Kids Night Out event Saturday, Oct. 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The event is open for boys and girls in grades 1-6 and will take place at Steele Hall on the campus.

The cost is $10, cash only. Participants can play basketball, kickball, wiffleball or anything else they want to do. The pool will also be available as will the lighted turf field. Pizza, snacks and drinks will be for sale.

Bills Booster Club

The Southern Tier Bills Booster Club will watch the Buffalo Bills vs. New York Giants game on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Kosciuszko Club's annual pig roast, which will start at 12:30 p.m.

Baseball Umpires

The Chautauqua County Baseball Umpires Association will be holding classes from mid-October through mid-December for anyone interested in becoming a high school baseball umpire.

These classes are also available for anyone who wants to become a certified umpire for Babe Ruth or Little League Baseball.

Classes will be held Monday evenings for eight weeks. Contact Ray Lindquist at 665-2865 to register.

The Monarchs fell to St. Vincent DePaul of East Aurora in Dioceses of Buffalo baseball league action.

Peyton Ahlstrom (five strikeouts), Troy Lanski (two strikeouts) and John Banach (one strikeout) led the Monarchs on the mound.

Nick Wittmeyer, Nick Sturnillo and Thomas Lidlow made several key defensive plays.

At the plate, Owen Schrantz and Lanski continued their hot hitting, going 2 for 3. Lucas Porpiglia, Chris Dempsey and Ahlstrom chipped in with a hits.

The Monarchs' offensive power was led by Mike Barnes, David Bartholomew, Troy Lanski (two RBIs), Lucas Porpiglia, Peyton Ahlstrom and Owen Schrantz (homer and four RBI's).

Chris Dempsey (six strikeouts) and Lucas Porpiglia (four Strikeouts) led the Monarchs on the mound.

Leading the offense for Fredonia were Dakota Gardner with 167 yards rushing on 17 carries with two touchdowns, Michael-Joe Pucci with 117 yards rushing on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Eric Swoyer and Giovanni Ruiz both had one touchdown. Leading the defense were Pucci with nine tackles, Swoyer, Gardner and Ruiz all had seven tackles and Nick Gloff had one interception.
