Pets need blessings, too

October 22, 2011
The OBSERVER

Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dunkirk recently celebrated the Feast of Saint Francis with a blessing of the pets of the parish. In spite of the weather, a large number of pet owners braved the elements and joined together in honor of the day. Father Joseph Zalacca presided over the blessing which included his very own black lab, Gabby. Gabby traveled all the way from Leroy, N.Y., with Fr. Zalacca's parents. Medals in honor of St. Francis, protector of pets, were given to all in attendance. During the blessing, a small collection was taken to benefit the Lakeshore Humane Society for all animals less fortunate than those of the parish. Pictured is Barb Kubera looking on as her dog, Mickey, and his new friend received a St. Francis blessing from Fr. Zalacca.
