December 3, 2011
The OBSERVER

JAMESTOWN - An informational poster on energy awareness, created by Mrs. Peterson's fourth and fifth grade class at the Catholic Academy of the Holy Family, won top honors at the Chautauqua County Energy Conference and Expo.

Eight schools throughout the county participated in the contest and during the expo visitors were given the opportunity to help select the winning entry.

To prepare for the contest, students learned about many different energy sources and then worked together to illustrate and explain in their own words ways to conserve energy at home.

Pictured with the fourth- and fifth-grade class are, back row, from left: Samuel Pellerito, principal of Catholic Academy of The Holy Family; Mrs. Peterson, fourth/fifth grade teacher; Carol Rasmussen, CCIDA; and Gregory J. Edwards, Chautauqua County executive.

During Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards' recent visit to the school, the students explained their ideas for the poster and discussed green sources of energy with him.

"I want to thank the students in Mrs. Peterson's class for creating such a wonderful poster," Edwards said. "Their work and knowledge on the subject of energy is very impressive."

In recognition of winning the competition, Edwards presented the $250 prize from the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency to Principal Samuel Pellerito and fourth- and fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Peterson. The prize money will be used for a "green" initiative project at the Catholic Academy of The Holy Family.
