BROCTON - The Brocton Teachers' Association announces its selections for Student of the Month for November.
Eighth-grader Mikayla Kawski is the middle school honoree. She is the daughter of Ruth Klein and Richard Kawski of Fredonia. Mikayla is a busy young lady, participating in band and chorus, including All County, Chautauqua County Children's Chorale and Brocton's musical productions. She is currently rehearsing for the role of Imogene in the "Best Christmas Pageant Ever" which will be shown Dec. 11 at the Fredonia Opera House. Mikayla is also a dancer and teaching assistant for Tap n' Toes Performing Arts. In addition to all her musical activities, Mikayla is on the high honor roll and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Her favorite class is Social Studies.
The BOCES Student of the Month is sophomore Jacob Steinhoff, son of Alan and Valerie Steinhoff of Stockton. Jacob has been involved in the school-to-work program for the past two years and is a member of the Special Olympic Bowling team. He is currently enrolled in the Conservation program at BOCES and just recently passed his exam to be allowed to work on heavy equipment. Outside of school, Jacob is a 4-H Team Ambassador and raises and shows animals (hogs, goats and chickens) for the Chautauqua County Fair. He also works on a local dairy farm. Jacob plans to stay in the agricultural business by owning his own farm. Jacob is a hardworking, dependable young man, has a positive attitude towards others (students and staff) and always tries his best.
The high school honoree is senior Emily Crandall, daughter of Todd Crandall and Laura Geraci of Portland. She keeps herself very busy participating in volleyball, softball, student council, Interact, band, chorus, prom committee and Brocton Review. She holds the offices of secretary for student council, vice president for Class of 2012 and vice president of the National Honor Society. Outside of school, she is a member of the Tri-Church Parish of Brocton, JAVA Travel Volleyball Team and is a certified Red Cross lifeguard. She was named the Brocton Central student of the year for the Jamestown Community College Connections program. Next fall, Emily plans to attend college and is undecided on her major.
