A letter about my hero

December 12, 2011
The OBSERVER

Editor, OBSERVER:

I would like to take the time to thank a great person in my life, my grandfather Joe Catalano. Joe grew up in and still lives in Dunkirk.

Some of you may know my grandpa as "Joe the milkman" as he worked for Briggs Dairy most of his life, he also is a World War II U.S. Navy Seabee veteran.

My father (Tony) who was a Navy veteran, piqued my interest in the military at a young age. I was 15 when he passed and my grandpa got the job of trying to reason with a teen. I had committed to joining the service at 17, I was to become a Seabee like my grandpa.

I chose the "Bees" after hearing his stories of life on the Pacific islands and what they did for the war effort.

Thank you pops for all you did for me and continue to do for my family, we love you.

SCOTT A. SINARE,

Cassadaga
