A change at the Chautauqua County Airport in Jamestown will mean a new name, but no actual differences for passengers.
According to Dave Sanctuary, county airports manager, Gulfstream International Airlines has changed its name to Silver Airways.
Previously, Gulfstream provided service between the county airport at Jamestown and Cleveland. Gulfstream flew the route under a Continental Connection affiliation with Continental Airlines.
There will be no noticeable change to the airline service or schedule out of Jamestown, Sanctuary said Monday of Gulfstreams switch to Silver Airways.
In addition to the Gulfstream change, the recent merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines will result in all flights at the Jamestown airport being flown under the United name.
In November of last year, Gulfstream declared bankruptcy though there was never any risk or intention of them going out of business, Sanctuary told the OBSERVER on Monday.
They were in a situation where, in order for them to do what they wanted to do, they had to get out from underneath the restrictive leases that they had on aircraft, Sanctuary said. They owned some and they leased some.
In the end, an investor was found to take over operations following Gulfstreams declaring bankruptcy.
Silver Airways is owned by Victory Park Capital, a Chicago-based investment firm. The company initially launched the airline as VPAA Co. dba/Gulfstream International Airlines in May 2011 following the acquisition of select assets from the former Gulfstream International Airlines.
Silver Airways is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and operates under a principal code share and alliance agreement with United Airlines and Copa Airlines. It operates more than 100 daily scheduled flights at 29 gateways in Florida, the Bahamas, Montana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
In addition to taking over Gulfstream and changing the name to Silver Airways, the company has also purchased several much larger aircraft which will be used for service between Florida and the Bahamas.
