Editor, OBSERVER:
I have a comment for those who want the $20,000 returned to the Dunkirk so called Free Library.
Of those who want the money returned to the library, are they actually taxpayers from the city of Dunkirk? Do these individuals take into consideration the other areas of importance there are that should be taken first in priorities such as city equipment that is outdated at the city garage. Also the city garage that is outdated and falling apart. The fire hall at fire headquarters has been falling apart for years.
The disposal plant is in need of major repairs, the filtration plant that produces our fresh water is in need of major repairs. So you see that the library is low on priorities for funding.
This is all common sense. The only people who are using this common sense are the Common Council. The library has taken this money away from really important projects this city has while other communities are cutting budgets on their libraries or just shutting them down for the same reasons I have mentioned.
It is a shame that those who are on the board of the library cannot understand this major problem. Again, I am glad this council has started the cuts in the library funding and hopefully it will continue in the future. The Dunkirk school system has libraries available at their institutions, so why not use those facilities? Even $150,000 is way too much for the library but taking $20,000 off is a good start. The library will never go broke not with donations and grant money. Wake up people and use our tax money for more important projects.
