Trees and shrubs available through county’s Soil and Water Conservation District

January 11, 2012
The OBSERVER

JAMESTOWN - The Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for tree and shrub seedling booklet.

"It will soon be time to place your order for trees and wildlife shrubs through the Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District's 2011 Tree and Shrub Program," according to David Wilson, District Field Manager.

Orders will be filled on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last. Orders must be placed by April 1. Pickup is scheduled for mid-April at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown, and the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds in Dunkirk.

The district program is designed to supplement the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's annual tree and shrub program, which sells seedlings in large quantity bundles.

"Many people do not have space or time to plant 500 to 1,000 trees," Wilson said.

Having trees and shrubs available in smaller quantities allows more people to experience the pleasure of helping to improve the environment through the planting of trees.

Seventy different trees, shrubs, ground covers species, perennial flower bulbs will be offered through the District's 2012 program.

In addition to the selection of evergreens, hardwoods, wildlife shrubs and ground cover; fertilizer tablets, fluorescent orange marking flags, tree identification booklets, "Warning: Tree Plantation" and other posted signs, bluebird, bat and butterfly houses and tree protectors will also be available this year. Again, this year, the group will offer three types of ground cover and Country Wisdom Bulletins.

The trees can be used for wildlife habitat improvement, soil erosion control, reforestation, Christmas trees, windbreaks and general beatification.

For more information or to receive copies of the booklet and order form, interested individuals or groups should contact the Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District Office by calling 664-2351 Ext. 3, any weekday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or on our website at www.soilwater.org.
