New year baby born to local couple stationed overseas

Joel Stein of the U.S. Navy and his wife, Valerie, are the parents of the first baby born in 2012 in Naples, Italy. Savannah Elizabeth Stein was born on Jan. 2, 2012 at 7:32 a.m. at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Naples. She weighed in at 7 lbs., 9 oz., and measured 21 and 1/4 inches long.

Joel is a CE2 with the Naval Computer & Telecommunications Station. A 2005 graduate of Brocton Central School, he joined the Navy in October 2005. He will be stationed in Naples for three years, from April 2011 until April 2014. He is the son of Wanda Stein of Fredonia and the late Charles Stein.

Valerie is the daughter of Allen and Cheryl Carlson Sr. of Westfield. She graduated from Brocton Central School in 2007.

The couple's oldest child, Joel Jr., was born April 4, 2008. Before Italy, they were stationed in Port Hueneme, Calif.
