Lincoln chose the enemy

January 30, 2012
The OBSERVER

Editor, OBSERVER:

Thank you Vicki for your column "Looking for leadership" (Jan. 18).

As a frustrated Conservative, I share your concerns about who will lead the Republicans to victory in the next election and be the leader our nation so desperately needs. What is going on in the Republican primary race I find similar to what went on in the Republican race prior to Lincoln's election in 1861.

I suggest those interested should read Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals." Lincoln picked those who bitterly opposed him for his cabinet jobs. It will take such a man to solve our problem that have festered for decades.

JACK BENSON,

Fredonia
