SUNY Fredonia students to present Opera Scenes at 1891 Fredonia Opera House

March 1, 2012
The OBSERVER

The Student Opera Theatre Association of SUNY Fredonia will offer its annual Opera Scenes production on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House in the village of Fredonia.

Scenes directed by members of the Fredonia voice faculty Dr. Angela Haas, Joe Dan Harper, Lynne McMurtry and Julie Newell will feature finales from Mozart's, "The Magic Flute" and "The Marriage of Figaro;" Donizetti's, "Don Pasquale," and Rossini's, "The Barber of Seville."

Completing the program will be scenes from Bizet's, "Carmen," and Richard Strauss', "Ariadne auf Naxos."

All scenes will be sung in their original language, and two graduate student conductors will lead a small instrumental ensemble.

Opera Scenes will feature more than 70 students and Newell noted that it is a wonderful training ground, not only for the performers, but also for the student producers and stage managers, as well as student scene and costume designers.

Tickets may be reserved by calling the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Box Office at 679-0891 or may be purchased at the door.
