Elections: Few candidates, fewer even care

March 15, 2012
The OBSERVER

Don't look now, but the Tuesday village elections are just around the corner. And, if you live in a village and have not received a visit, don't worry, you have not been forgotten.

It's just that ... well, they really don't need your vote. As is usually the case in area village elections, many have been asked to run - and few actually want to serve.

Locally, there is a race for mayor in Cherry Creek, and three candidates running for two seats in Mayville, Silver Creek and Westfield.

Mayoral posts in Brocton and Forestville are unopposed.

Residents like to blame Albany and New York state for local woes. But the bigger picture is problems here are caused by local, stubborn attitudes as streams of cash have run dry.

A lack of candidates - and high taxes - is just one more reason to believe our problems start at the bottom, with small villages that really no one wants to run, and makes its way to the top.
