Twenty years ago - 1992
Merle E. West of Fredonia has been named the Great Lakes Grape Growers "1992 Grape Industry Person of the Year." The award was given during the growers' conference recently at the Days Inn, Fredonia. West owned and operated a grape farm on East Main Street for more than 40 years. He was presented with a plaque.
Thirty years ago - 1982
The 15-member Cassadaga Valley Central School Buildings Utilization Task Force has recommended closing the Stockton Elementary School next year and the Gerry Elementary School sometime in the future. Stockton Elementary has experienced declining enrollment over the past several years and projected figures noted that 59 students would be enrolled at the school during the 1982-83 school year if the facility were to remain open.

Timothy Felt and Robert Guenther have been named as the winners of the Outstanding Teenage Young Man contest sponsored by the Dunkirk Jaycees.

The speed limit on the State Thruway will be increased within the next few weeks from 60 to 65 miles per hour.
