Body found near where Jamestown man went missing

March 17, 2012
OBSERVER Staff Report , The OBSERVER

KIANTONE - Jamestown Police say they've found a body near where a 48-year-old man went missing Jan. 22.

It's not known yet whether the body discovered Friday is that of Michael Whitehill, who was last seen sitting in his disabled vehicle in the town of Kiantone.

Police say the body was spotted during an aerial search undertaken by New York state police who were looking for Whitehill.

The remains were off the road in what police described as a gravel area. Police aren't commenting on a potential cause of death.

Whitehill's vehicle was found abandoned later on Jan. 22 with damage to its hood and driver's side as if it had struck another vehicle or object.

Investigators believe Whitehill may have walked away from his vehicle or may have been picked up by another person driving by.

An autopsy is planned for today.
