High School Baseball Showcase
Chautauqua Lake Central School, with the assistance of the Chautauqua County Baseball Umpires' Association, will once again sponsor the High School Baseball Showcase, April 27-28, at Russell E. Diethrick Park in Jamestown.
This is the sixth year of the resurrection of the showcase, which was conceived in the 1980s. The event will feature 12 teams from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, in a schedule of six games over the two-day period.
The showcase gives local high school players an opportunity to play in a professional baseball stadium, with the potential to be seen by college coaches, whom have been notified about the event.
The schedule is as follows:
Friday, April 27
Forestville at Chaut. Lake, 4:30 p.m.
Gowanda at Southwestern, 7:30
Saturday, April 28
Clymer at West Valley, 10 a.m.
Ellicottville at Westfield, 1 p.m.
Pine Valley vs. Panama, 4 p.m.
Dunkirk vs. Maple Grove, 7 p.m.
A gate fee of $1 for students (K-12) and senior citizens and $2 for adults, will be charged to help Chautauqua Lake baseball, as well as to help add to the Umpires' Association Baseball Scholarship Fund. The gate fee will also go to help offset some of the costs of operating the event.
All umpires working games during the weekend will be donating their game fees back to the association to be put into their scholarship fund.
NCSA 3-on-3 soccer
The NCSA summer program will offer 3-on-3 soccer for high school players this season.
Their will be five players on a roster with three on the field at a time. No goalies are used. The game is played on U-8 fields which are 30x40. Each team is required to have at least one male and one female on the field at all times.
The jayvee teams are for those who have completed eighth and ninth grade and they will play Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. They will play two games per night. The varsity teams are for those who have completed 10th-12th grade. They will play two games Thursday nights startng at 7:15 p.m.
All players are to register at regular NCSA summer registration sessions. Players can sign up as individuals or in groups of two (one male and one female). Additional players will be added to those teams of two by division coordinator. This is an attempt to avoid one team dominating over other teams. Cost is $50 with $20 discount for registered travel soccer players. For more information, contact Betsy Lang at 366-6517.
Clinics will be held the week of June 11 while scrimmages begin the week of June 18. Games will be played June 25-July 23rd with playoffs set for the week of July 30.
