GERRY - A work team of 16 members from the Free Methodist Church in Gerry are presently in Haiti for eight days helping to build a school in Gonaives, about 95 miles from Haiti's capital city of Port-au-Prince. Their major project while there will be to construct a roof onto the school before they return on April 1. The trip has been in the planning for more than a year with the Gerry church raising more than $30,000 for the expenses of the team and to buy supplies.
The Free Methodist denomination first began their work in Haiti in 1964 and presently have 102 local congregations supported by five full-time missionaries. The churches there have continued to grow in spite of the devastating earthquake in 2010, which destroyed many of the schools and churches and claimed the life of one missionary.
The Gerry Free Methodist Church is located at 4500 Church St., directly behind the Gerry Town Hall. More information is available at the church's website, www.gerryfmc.org.
