50-Plus Seniors
COLLINS - It will be a shortened week for 50-Plus Senior activities as the L. K. Painter Community Center will be closed on Good Friday which will advance Friday senior programs one week. Activities this week are as follows: on Monday and Wednesday, Indoor Walking and Exercise is led by Pat Tucker, 9 a.m. in the gym. On Monday, an informal euchre game will be held at 1 p.m. in the Senior Room. On Tuesday/Thursday, Gentle Arthritis Exercises are held at 10 a.m. in the gym.
Quilting with Florence is held Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room of Collins Public Library. For more information, call Florence Reynolds, 532-3075. Also on Wednesday is Senior Bowling at 1 p.m., held at K & L Lanes, Gowanda. The cost is $1.75 per game or three games for $5. Open Crafts with Pat Tucker is held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Senior Room.
Registration is now open for the April 24 AARP Driving Course. Pre-registration is required and can only be made by calling 532-2507. Cost has been increased by AARP to $17 for those with valid AARP membership cards and $19 for all others. The six-hour class will begin at 9 a.m. in the Community Room (formerly the Lounge Room) in the back section of the building.
There will be a 45-minute break for lunch. Lunch will be offered at $2.50 by the 50-Plus Senior Program, however, reservations must be made when registering.
Lunch payment will be collected the morning of the class. A tentative AARP Driving Class is scheduled for June but could be canceled if April class enrollment makes another spring class unwarranted. If canceled, the next driving class at the center would be in September.
Openings are still available for the July 29 "Carol Burnett Show" at the Station Dinner Theater in Erie, Pa. A two-hour stop at Presque Isle Casino will precede the musical show and buffet lunch. Casino incentive is $10 free slot play. Cost is $76 for residents of the towns of Collins, Perrysburg and Persia and $77 for all others. A $25 deposit is due when making reservations.
Reservations are slow in coming for the Buffalo Bisons vs. Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 1 p.m. game Aug. 16 at Coca Cola Field in Buffalo. Cost is $23 for the three towns and $24 for all others. Cost includes school bus transportation, game admission, hot dog and soda. Price is reasonable and it is a fun way to spend a summer afternoon.
It is not too late to sign up for the June 6-8 trip to Amishlands at Lancaster, Pa., as a few slots are still available. Cost is $285 per person (double occupancy) and includes two nights lodging, two breakfasts and two dinners, performance of "Jonah" at the Millennium Theatre, a guided tour of the Amish countryside and much more.
Reservations for trips can be made by calling 532-2507. Flyers and sign-up sheets are also available in the senior room during regular program hours.
Time is running out to take advantage of the Free Tax Help offered by AARP and the IRS. Call Alison or Don Girod at 257-3285 for information and appointments at Cattaraugus Free Library.
AARP 299
The meeting was called to order by President Ellie Dietzen. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all in attendance. A poem was recited by Jean Smyczek. The secretary's report was read and approved. The treasurer's report was given by Patty Halas and filed for audit.
Dietzen, Irene Rozumalski and Smyczek attended an AARP meeting in Jamestown recently.
Rozumalski thanked the girls for helping with refreshments during the safe driving course.
At the next meeting, April 16 at 1 p.m. at the Dunkirk Senior Center, Mr. Armbruster from AARP to speak from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on future needs and how to handle them. Members are welcome bring a friend.
The wine raffle was held and also 50/50.
