John Daniel O'Brian, a resident of Tonawanda, N.Y., died Saturday, April 14, 2012, in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, N.Y.
He was born, Sept. 7, 1938 in Dunkirk, N.Y., the son of Jane (Robertson) and John D. O'Brian III.
John grew up on Lowell Place in Fredonia, N.Y., and was a 1956 graduate of Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk, N.Y., and a 1960 graduate of Niagara University.

A Tonawanda resident since 2006, he had lived on Holbrook Street in James-town, N.Y., from 1963 to 1980, on Terrace Avenue in Lakewood, N.Y., from 1983 to 1984 and Hall Avenue in Jamestown, N.Y., from 1984 to 2000.
He had been employed as a case worker for James-town City Welfare and Social Services and as Social Services supervisor for Chautauqua County, N.Y. He greatly enjoyed his co-workers, and was a great conversationalist.
John had very fond memories as a camper and staff member with ''the admiral'' at YMCA Camp in the Woods on Bear Lake, N.Y. He served as a volunteer for the James-town YMCA and Y Guides program in the 1970s. He served as ''chief'' under YMCA director, Spiro Bello. The YMCA being of such a value to John, he made sure his children went to YMCA resident camp and they attended Camp Onyahsa.
He loved the Cleveland Indians, the New York Yankees and especially the Buffalo Bills. He also adored his Dalmatians. His other interest included classic movies, history and drawing.
He is survived by two sons: Jonathan O'Brian of Jamestown, N.Y., and Paul O'Brian of Burlington, Vt.; a daughter, Jean O'Brian of Holmen, Wis.; his wife, Martha ''Marty'' O'Brian, whom he married in 1983; two stepchildren: Shannon (Bob) McMahan of Williamsville, N.Y., and Christian Parks of Jamestown, N.Y.; and a brother, Jim O'Brian of Huntington, N.Y.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date.
