WESTFIELD - Kristyn LeBarron celebrated her 18th birthday in style Wednesday.
LeBarron worked all seven innings in the circle for the Westfield Lady Wolverines, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking three in a 4-3 victory over Franklinville in?CCAA?Division 3 high school softball.
Unfortunately for LeBarron, her team trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh.
That would change in a hurry.
Lynn Wood led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and was pushed to third on a single off the bat of Rachel Allen, who stole second. Rachel Quagliana worked a walk to load the bases for Megan Shepard, who promptly scored Wood and Mackenzie DeLand, who had pinch ran for Allen. Another passed ball by Franklinville hurler, Anne Ciesla, allowed Quagliana and Shepard to move up to third and second base, respectively. LeBarron stepped to the plate and got her party started early with a game-winning two-run double.
"It was a nice win for all of us," Westfield coach Dave Luder said. "The kids that are young learned that we can't make mistakes. (Franklinville) is a solid little team. They're well coached."
Wood, Allen and Shepard all finished with two hits in the win for the Lady Wolverines, who missed opportunities to score all afternoon long.
"We threatened in the first, we left bases loaded in the third and we left runners on in the fifth," Luder said. "We were getting on base. I think (Ciesla) had two perfect innings."
Ciesla finished the tough-luck loser, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out five and walking four.
