Troopers ticket 203

for distracted driving

in Chautauqua County

The state police in Chautauqua County just completed a three-week distracted driver blitz using a newly acquired Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicle. Their findings revealed that despite the vast media attention and educational material surrounding the dangers of cell phone use and texting while driving, people are still taking unnecessary risks.

During the targeted enforcement period, troopers issued 187 cell phone violations and 16 more for texting while driving. Captain Steven Graap said that while people readily admit that these driving behaviors are inherently dangerous, many continue to perform these acts when they get behind the wheel of their vehicles.

The new unmarked vehicles allow for troopers to observe traffic without being easily detected. The troopers hope to deter what has become a growing problem. In order to alleviate any public concerns, the vehicles' use is restricted to daylight hours. Vehicles are equipped with an extensive lighting package and are operated by a uniformed trooper.
