Twenty years ago - 1992

The Dunkirk Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a request from John Ramos of 501 South Roberts Road, Dunkirk to reopen a tavern at that address. The business was previously operated as the J&R Bar several years ago and Rogelio Rodriguez of Washington Avenue, now wants to lease the facility and operate it as the Double R Bar.

Thirty years ago - 1982

Pictured is Forestville's Rich Davidson, who finished 16th in the Texas Bobtail 250 at the Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. Davidson, from Route 39 in Forestville was sixth in the working class truck division. Jerry Duffy of Lake Avenue, Fredonia finished 12th overall and fourth in the working class truck division.

Forty years ago - 1972

The Allegheny Ludlum Steel Plant in Dunkirk is making a new flagpole for the city's Memorial Park, it was announced today by the Dunkirk Veterans Council. The park has been without a flagpole since last July when a 132-foot wooden pole was removed due to its decaying condition. The new stainless steel pole will be between 65 and 70 feet tall.

Fifty years ago - 1962

"West Side Story," voted the best picture of 1961 at the 34th annual Academy Award presentation, almost swept the boards, winning 10 of its 11 Oscar nominations. The best actress award went to Sophia Loren and Maximilian Schell was named best actor.
