‘Miracle’ baby born to Fredonia native

April 29, 2012
The OBSERVER

An Aug. 3, 2011 accident that took the life of her fiance and nearly ended her own has found a happy ending for a Fredonia native. Courtney Grates, a 1999 Fredonia Central School graduate, who was pregnant at the time, spent weeks in a trauma center and endured physical and occupational therapy following a tragic bicycle/truck accident in Portland, Ore.

Maritza Itzel Reyes Grates was born on March 6 in Portland, a healthy 7 pounds, 10 ounces. For Courtney, along with her friends and family, the birth is nothing short of a miracle, and has tempered the sadness of the loss of Maritza's father.

Courtney, the daughter of Frank and Terri Grates of Fredonia, and her daughter are at home in Portland.
