Annual Woody Keyser Memorial Open Softball Tournament set for June 2-3

The Woody Keyser Memorial Open Modified Softball Tournament is slated for June 2-3.

This year will mark the 13th annual event, which is held in Westfield.

The tournament began in 1999 in honor of Woody Keyser. Woody was a beloved member of the Westfield community who dedicated his time coaching and sharing his love of the sport with a generation of youngsters. All proceeds from this tournament go to The Woody Keyser Memorial Fund.

Donations from the fund are made in Woody's name to local youth baseball and softball leagues. In addition, the tournament supports the Woody Keyser Memorial Scholarship at Westfield Academy and Central School. Each year, one graduating senior baseball or softball player who exhibits hard work, dedication and sportsmanship is the recipient of this award.

Ten-man open modified teams are invited to participate in this family-oriented event. There will be a $275 entry fee. The top three teams will receive prize money and commemorative shirts.

To participate, contact tournament director, Steve Keyser, at 680-0207 or, visit www.leaguelineup.com/thekeyser for more information.

Hits For a Cure Fundraiser

Hits For a Cure (H.F.A.C) of Chautauqua County is hosting its first fundraiser on June 9, at the Gerry Town Park.

The event kicks off at 6 p.m. and has already attracted many individuals and organizations wanting to contribute their time and efforts to the community's fight against breast cancer.

The game will begin with the National Anthem sung by Miss Megan Tracey.

Although the baseball tournament is nothing new to Gerry, the fundraiser is, and Bradley Barmore, HFAC President, is excited to be providing this addition.

"My father, Dean Barmore, has organized and held a tournament annually for the past 14 years to raise money for the local baseball program and it will again commence this year," he said. "However, this will be the first year we will integrate Hits For a Cure into the event."

As two baseball teams, the Cassadaga Reds and Sinclairville Mariners, go head to head, there will be lots going on. There will be a 50/50 raffle and prize giveaways for those who attend and also some gifts for the two teams participating. Individuals or businesses can provide donations or sponsor the event and be featured throughout the entirety of the game.

HFAC was founded by Barmore with the support of his family after having personal experiences with breast cancer.
