JAMESTOWN - Fifty surgical nurses and technicians from WCA Hospital's Operating Room and Labor and Delivery departments began a year-long, Confidence-Based Learning program.
This program was funded entirely through grants from the A.W. Rappole, M.D. and Bert W. Rappole, M.D. Nursing Professional Development Fund administered by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and the WCA Foundation's Dr. Harold and Joyce Childress Fund.
A program designed by the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses' (AORN), Confidence-Based Learning does away with old testing methods and presents a sophisticated learning process though online modules to its participants. Instead of offering content in various forms and taking a post-test, participants are presented the material and challenged to answer each question correctly before moving onto the next module, therefore leaving a complete mastery of the material presented to each individual.

The Chautauqua County Regional Community Foundation and the WCA Foundation recently combined forces to train nurses.
A 2008 study performed by the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine found that individuals using this type of learning program were shown to be 15 to 20 percent more effective in knowledge acquisition, as opposed to those using traditional learning practices.

"We are confident that this AORN program will result in facility standardization and improvement in surgical practices by our nurses," Diggs said.
