Medicor to pilot multi-lingual medication system

June 15, 2012
The OBSERVER

Medicor Associates of Chautauqua's Dunkirk office will be piloting Meducation, an exciting new computerized program that will help eliminate language barriers and improve medication adherence for patients reading or speaking limited English. Medicor is one of three pilot sites in Chautauqua County sponsored through a grant from the federal government's Beacon Community Cooperative Agreement Program in partnership with HEALTHeLINK of Western New York working with members of the Chautauqua County Health Network (CCHN).

Developed with funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Meducation is a time-saving, innovative online tool that generates custom medication instructions for patients in over 15 languages. Other features include content tailored to a fifth- to sixth-grade reading level and large fonts for those with impaired vision. Meducation also gives patients access to online videos demonstrating proper medication use.

"With our large senior and Hispanic clientele, we are very pleased our office has been selected for this pilot program. Their access to Meducation will greatly assist our patients in correct medication administration," Hyder Alam, MD, FACP of the Dunkirk office stated.

"Our doctors and staff simply lack the time and resources to adequately demonstrate proper medication use. And when language barriers are present, education is extremely difficult. Meducation will save us time and ensure safety by providing on-line access to demonstrations and education viewed in the patient's primary language," Hyder Alam, MD, FACP of the Dunkirk office stated.

"Our participation in this pilot wouldn't have been possible without our active involvement in the CCHN of which Dr. G. Jay Bishop is medical director. Use of the Meducation system will complement our patient services which also recently received national recognition as patient-centered medical homes," Hyder Alam, MD, FACP of the Dunkirk office stated.
