Rural Ministry plans workshop

June 20, 2012
The OBSERVER

The Chautauqua County Rural Ministry (CCRM)will present its second workshop in the Local Farmers, Local Foods series on Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. Jessica Runge of Roots and Wings CSA Farm in Cherry Creek will share her knowledge of operating a successful farm, currently producing vegetables, herbs, cut flowers, eggs and pigs. These products are mainly sold directly to consumers through the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model. The farm is managed with a commitment to sustainable agriculture practices and is NOFA-NY Certified Organic.

"We have had a tremendous response from the community thus far to this series; the first workshop with Roo Haven farm drew over 35 people," Sarah Sorci, CCRM Gleaning Project coordinator, says of the Local Farmers, Local Foods workshops. "Jessica has been a strong voice for local farmers and the local food system, and coordinates regular Western New York organic/natural farmers' gatherings. We are delighted to hear about her farm, and look forward to discussing the nutritional and community benefits of eating local foods like hers."

The workshop will take place at the Friendly Kitchen, 131 Central Ave., Dunkirk. There is no cost. Participants will receive educational materials and free gifts. RSVP by Friday with Sorci at 366-1787. These workshops are made possible by a grant through the NYS Department of Health Division of Nutrition. CCRM is a United Way Community Partner.
