WESTFIELD - The Westfield Quilters' Guild will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday at Noble Winery. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. and will feature the Keepsake Challenge quilts. Noble Winery is located at 8630 Hardscrabble Road, Westfield.
Keepsake Quilting of Center Harbor, N.H., has been sponsoring quilt challenges for more than 20 years. Twice a year, quilters compete in their quilt contests - each with a different theme. To enter a challenge, quilters purchase a quarter-yard of six printed fabrics specially chosen to challenge their creativity. Each quilt may be sewn by hand or machine. The finished 30" x 30" quilt must contain at least four of the challenge fabrics and may have two additional fabrics of the quilter's choosing. Thousands of entries have been entered over the years.
The current contest deals with creating an Autumn's Glory by finding inspiration in the colors and images of autumn. Entries for this challenge must be received by Keepsake Quilting by Aug. 15.
The first- and second-place quilts become part of the permanent Keepsake collection and travel to quilt shows, guild meetings and museums across the country. Cindy Carlson of Jamestown came in second with her wall hanging of the Barcelona Lighthouse. This wall hanging will be one of the 22 quilts that will be on display at Noble Winery.
Keepsake winners receive gift certificates to be used for a shopping spree from the Keepsake Quilting catalog. First-place winners receive $500; second place, $300; third place, $100; honorable mention, $50; and staff's choice, $200. Of course, "bragging rights" are priceless.
Also on display at the guild's monthly meeting will be the quilts entered for the Westfield Quilters' recent quilt challenge. Charge for non-guild members is $5.
