Town Clerk Peg Watkins (left) is resigning effective Aug. 1.
Town Clerk Peg Watkins read her resignation letter effective Aug. 1 which was accepted with regret from the board.
"I have enjoyed the past 26 years working with all of the board members," Watkins said as she read her resignation letter.
The board accepted the resignation of Watkins.
"It's with a lot of regret that we accept her resignation," Supervisor Dennis Stopen said. "The town clerk is the person that really knows the town business, stays abreast of it and certainly not only assists but leads us on the board."
The board can appoint someone to fill Watkins' position after Aug. 1 but someone must run for the position of town clerk. Watkins said the Democrat and Republican committees will nominate someone for the position of town clerk and if the two parties do not come to consensus, an election will be held in November. The elected official will serve out the rest of Watkins term which is one year.
In May board member Tamara Utley resigned to take position of deputy town clerk which was appointed by Watkins. The board decided to leave the vacancy left by Utley open until the November elections. Those who are interested in running should contact the board of elections.
In other business:
The town is going to look into purchasing additional signs with appropriate verbiage to limit activity after dusk in Versailles town park.
The town clerk hours will change for the summer season. The town clerk will be open on Saturdays through the end of July.
