Twenty years ago - 1992

An unsecured load of coiled steel weighing 39,000 pounds broke free from a tractor trailer truck this morning on Route 5 in Silver Creek. The coil landed on the highway striking a curb and sending debris flying onto cars at Damon Motors. Police said several cars were struck by the pieces of concrete and the curb was damaged. No injuries were reported.

Thirty years ago - 1982

The fate of the Iroquois Motel was discussed at a recent Sheridan Town Board meeting. Alphonse and Marie Negorniak, owners of the motel and restaurant on Route 20, were requested to attend the meeting to reveal plans for the boarded-up building. Last year, the motel was cited under the town's unsafe building ordinance and the Negorniaks were ordered to make the structure safe and secure.

Forty years ago - 1972

State Assemblyman John W. Beckman has suggested that the county legislature consider the creation of a county office for the aging.

Fifty years ago - 1962

Dentists in northern Chautauqua County are cooperating in a state-wide program to provide individual, form-fitting mouthpieces for high school football players in the area.
