Speeding stop leads to other charges
ELLERY On Saturday, two Sinclairville men were charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and alcohol-related charges.
Around midnight., sheriff's patrol stopped a speeding motorist on Bemus-Ellery Road in the town of Ellery. The operator was identified as Michael P. Near II, 18, of Sinclairville. His passenger was identified as Mark V. Banse-Fay, 19, also of Sinclairville. Deputies observed an open can of beer on the floor of the passenger side.
Upon further investigation, deputies discovered marijuana and additional alcoholic beverages in the vehicle.
Near was cited for speeding and possessing alcohol under 21 years old. Banse-Fay was cited for open container in vehicle and possessing alcohol under 21 years old. Additionally, both men were charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. They will answer the charges in Ellery Town Court on a later date.

PORTLAND On Sunday, a Portland man was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and turned over to Hamburg police on a warrant arrest.
Around 12:10 a.m., a vehicle was seen parked on the shoulder of Route 380 in the town of Portland. Deputy stopped and spoke the operator who identified himself as Jeremiah S. Burgess, 21, of Pecor Street, Portland. A check of Burgess revealed he had warrant for his arrest out of the Town of Hamburg.
After Burgess was taken into custody, a small amount of marijuana was discovered in his possession. Burgess was turned over to Hamburg Police and issued appearance for the charge out of Town of Portland.
MAYVILLE On Sunday, three youths from Mayville and Westfield were charged with burglary.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office investigated an incident at a residence in Mayville on Sunday around 8 a.m. A homeowner arrived at his residence and found unknown individuals sleeping in his house.
Sheriff's deputies were able to clear the house and remove three individuals from the residence who had no legal right to be there.
All three subjects were arraigned in the Town of Chautauqua Court and remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail.
Fredonia Police Department
Adam Joseph, 22, of Route 39, Forestville was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana on June 14. Joseph was seen speeding on Temple Street doing 43 mph in a 30 mph zone at 5:21 p.m. Joseph stated he was not familiar with the area due to recently moving here. During the stop, police found marijuana on the driver's seat. The vehicle was towed by Mancuso's Service Center. Joseph was released on an appearance ticket.
Justin G. Grant, 20, of Wisteria Drive was charged with second-degree harassment on June 16. At 11:30 p.m. police were called to a residence on Douglas Street for an altercation involving Grant and a victim. Grant allegedly pushed the victim while they were standing on outside stairs. Grant was held at the police station.
Ian J. Byrne, 20, of Jamestown was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property on June 17. Police received a call from Dunkirk Police at 5:24 a.m. reporting a larceny that had taken place on Clinton Street.
The victim was at a party on Clinton Street and observed Byrne and two other males in his vehicle. Byrne had stolen items from the victim's car. He was held at Fredonia Police.
Also in connection with this incident, David M. Monat, 20, of Buffalo Street, Gowanda was charged with second-degree harassment and criminal obstruction of breathing for pushing the victim down to the ground. Monat was arrested by the Gowanda Police Department on a warrant from Fredonia Police. He was held on $1,000 bail.
Victor Joly, 22, of Schulz Hall, SUNY Fredonia was charged with having a suspended registration on June 18. Police were traveling east on West Main Street when the license plate reader alerted to a van traveling west on West Main Street at 6 p.m. Joly was released on an appearance ticket.
Hayley R. LaCosse, 19, of Springville was charged with petit larceny on June 24 with an arrest warrant. In April, LaCosse stole merchandise from Crosby's Mart, 44 E. Main St. She was released on an appearance ticket.
Joseph A. Linger, 18, of Gerry was charged with disorderly conduct on June 22. At 11:54 p.m. police observed Linger operating his vehicle in a reckless manner in the Water Street parking lot. He was held on $100 bail.
