Twenty years ago - 1992

Dunkirk's Hispanic population has grown at an even faster rate than the rest of the country over the last decade. From 1980 to 1989, the number of Hispanics across the nation increased by 39 percent. In Dunkirk, that segment of the population experienced an increase of 70 percent. In 1990, a total of 1,954 of the city's 13,989 residents (14 percent) reported they were of Hispanic origin.

Thirty years ago - 1982

Michael J. Parker, son of Mrs. Ursula Parker of Dunkirk and the late Raymond Parker, is one of 11 new deacons ordained today by Bishop Edward Head at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Buffalo. Deacon Michael was vested by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Casimir A. Zak, pastor of St. Hyacinth's Church, his home parish. The Rev. Mr. Parker is assigned to SS Peter and Paul Church in Arcade until his ordination to the priesthood next year.

Forty years ago - 1972

The retirement of Miss Catherine Morrissey, a 37-year teacher in the Dunkirk public schools, has been accepted by the Dunkirk Board of Education.

Fifty years ago - 1962

The Rev. Wayne B. Price, pastor of the Sheridan Methodist Church, will leave this area for another pastorate in the Western Pennsylvania Conference. He and his family came to Sheridan in 1953.
