CHERRY CREEK - Michael G. Condon, 88, died Saturday (June 30, 2012) at the Gowanda Nursing and Rehab Health Center, Gowanda, N.Y.
He was born June 23, 1924 in Cherry Creek, N.Y., the son of the late Jack and Josephine (Guariglia) Condon.
He attended Cherry Creek High School where he played baseball and basketball and was recognized as the finest third baseman in the area. He was contracted by the NY Yankees but served in WWII, entering the U.S. Army and serving from 1942 until 1945. Mike served in Europe and was at the landing at Normandy in 1944. Mike served under General Patton in Germany helping to liberate the concentration camps and search for Hitler in Berlin.

Mike worked for Blackstone in Jamestown, where he worked for 40 years. Then following his retirement he worked for the Village of Cherry Creek Maintenance Department for fifteen years. He also was sex-ton of the Cherry Creek Central Cemetery for many years.
Mike played baseball in a city league in Jamestown at the John Dietrich Stadium and for Cherry Creek Town Teams. He then founded and coached the Babe Ruth Team in Cherry Creek. His love of sports continued throughout his life by following his grandsons' sports activities through their school years, never missing a game. Mike also enjoyed horseshoes and billiard leagues.
Mike was a lifetime member of the Pine Valley VFW and the Ellington Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his daughter: Jody (Danny) Farnham of South Dayton, N.Y.; three grandsons: Justin (Dawn) Farnham of Nashville, Tenn.; Jared (Tiffany) Farnham of South Dayton, N.Y.; Jordan Farnham of South Dayton, N.Y.; his great grandchildren: Michael Farnham of Nashville, Tenn; Alexis Farnham of Nashville, Tenn; Trista Farnham of South Dayton, N.Y., Danica Farnham of South Dayton, N.Y.; his two brothers: Sam (Elaine) Condon of Conewango Valley, N.Y. and Jack Condon, Jr. of Cherry Creek, N.Y., and his sister; Mildred (Dolly) Root of Gerry, N.Y.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-one years, Dorothy I. Condon, and his brother, Nick Condon.
Memorial services will be held Thursday (July 5, 2012) at 2:00 p.m. at Hills Funeral Chapel, 478 Balcom Corners South Day-ton, N.Y. Rev. Thomas Maynard will be officiating. Military services will be con-ducted by the South Dayton Legion Post 1593 and the Pine Valley VFW Post 2522 Interment will be in the Cherry Creek Central Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral chapel on Thursday from Noon to 2 p.m.
