James A. Elias, son of Mrs. Patricia Elias, 127 West Fifth St., Dunkirk and the late Constantine "Gus" Elias, has graduated from the University of Houston College of Optometry with a doctor of optometry degree. Dr. Elias, a Dunkirk High School graduate, received his B.A. degree in 1987 from the University of Rochester.

Willard Gaeddert, president of the Fredonia Kiwanis Club, recently presented a $1,000 check to Fredonia Mayor Louis Mancuso as partial payment for the Kiwanis Pavilion at Russell Joy Park. The club will pay the village a total of $9,000 for the pavilion, funds which are raised through various projects.

The Fredonia Zoning Board of Appeals has granted a variance so an antique business and furniture refinishing shop may begin operation at 159-161 Liberty St. in Fredonia.
Fifty years ago - 1962
The New York State Highway Department has announced plans to adopt a new marking system whereby all barrier lines would be solid yellow. Driver reaction tests recently conducted by the Vision Conservation Institute in Philadelphia found that yellow traffic markings were 35 to 50 percent more visible than white markings under all conditions.
