Participation proved dangerous

July 12, 2012
The OBSERVER

Editor, OBSERVER:

I would like to commend the few entries in the Fourth of July Mayville parade that braved the weather and finished the parade route in style. However, I must comment on the lack of foresight on the parade committee's part to realize it is common sense to stop a public event when lightning is present. My daughter dances for Collage Performing Arts and is usually one of the last groups to start the parade route.

I must commend her instructor for getting the girls to safety and realizing that marching in the parade "just to prove a point" could have been a costly mistake!

I cannot tell you the number of children I saw standing by the street while there was lightning. They are at the hands of their parents and are too young to realize the danger.

Fredonia
