Silver Creek School Board of Education selects new president

By NICOLE GUGINO , The OBSERVER

SILVER CREEK - Roles were shuffled as the Silver Creek Board of Education reorganized Wednesday.

The board meeting began with nominations for board president. Previous Vice President Martha Howard was nominated and appointed to the position.

"I am very excited to move forward and work with our new superintendent," Howard said after the meeting.

Former board President Matt Bogosian was nominated and appointed for the vice president position.

"I want to thank Matt and other board members for their support in my hiring. ... I would also like to thank Martha for for agreeing to be the person on the board dealing the most with me," new Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich said.

This was Ljiljanich's first board meeting as superintendent, and he said he has enjoyed his first week with the district.

"I have really enjoyed my first week and a half here and I know I'll enjoy the rest of my stay here ... Also, I want to publicly thank (Interim Superintendent David) Kurzawa. He did a really great job in the transition for me and we talked quite a bit and he did a lot to stabilize the transition for the district."

Ljiljanich said he will be meeting with school leaders and coming back to the board with anything he gathers from the meetings. He added there will be a workshop before the next meeting to look over district data, one of the things he wants the board to do more often.

In other business:

The board recognized the boys and girls outdoor track and field team for receiving the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association's Sportsmanship Award. Girls Varsity Coach Amy Seiders and Boys Coach Ben Forenzo were on hand to accept certificates and pins for the team members.

The board is seeking applications for the one-year remaining in Lou Dispenza's term after his recent resignation. The board opted not to hold a special election due to budget constraints and encourages any qualified school district resident to apply by submitting a letter of intent to the board president at Silver Creek Central School, P.O. Box 270, Silver Creek, NY 14136 by July 31. More information will appear in the next edition of the Silver Liner.

Friday is the last day the school is accepting applications for the middle school principal position. Ljiljanich said the district has received several applications already.

The board maintained its meeting days for the second and fourth Wednesdays for the upcoming school year. The next meeting will be held July 25.
