A coalition of elected and government officials, unions and civic organizations put together to help ensure the building of a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Dunkirk held an introductory press conference Thursday. The event at the city pier attracted a crowd of some 200 people as coalition leader, New York state Sen. Catharine Young , talked about the goals of the group and introduced its members. NRG Director of Development for NYS Jon Baylor provided background on the project and its financing.
The coalition is working to get NRG's proposal to build the CCGT approved by the state's Energy Highway Task Force. The current coal-fired plant in Dunkirk would be converted to a combined natural gas and coal plant until the CCGT plant could be completed. The goal for the new plant is 2017, at which point the current facility would be taken down.
