Three area youth hockey players have just returned from Boston, Mass., where they played in the 2012 Chowder Cup. The three players, Jake Majka (Dunkirk), left, Jared Hebner (Forestville), center, and Connor Graves (Silver Creek) right, all play for the Buffalo Stars 96 AAA spring hockey team. The tournament is one of the most prestigious spring hockey tournaments in the United States and Canada. The Stars finished 2-1 at the Chowder Cup, losing to the Quebec Prospects while defeating the B.S. Breaker and Mass Attack. This is the second year the trio has played for the Stars, which consists of players from Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Syracuse, Camillus, Rome, Portville, Hamburg, Dunkirk, Forestville and Silver Creek. Along with the Chowder Cup, the Stars also competed in the Bauer Challenge in St. Catherines, ON, the Hockey Fights Cancer Tournament, in Troy, MI, the North American Prospect Showcase and the Niagara Falls Challenge, where they went undefeated, claiming the championship. This past spring, the trio tried out for, and were signed to the Niagara University Jr. Purple Eagles AA 16-under team, playing for the Midget Tournament Bound team. The trio will play for the State Bound team this fall while both Majka and Hebner have been invited to take part in several United States Hockey League Tier 1 and Tier 2 Junior Hockey tryouts and Futures Camps. Graves, an integral part of the Silver Creek High School varsity lacrosse team, divides his skills between hockey and lacrosse.
The Fredonia 11-12 year-gold girls' softball all-star team ended their run for the state championship, falling 15-1 to Section 3's Esophus.
Mekenna Leid scored Fredonia's lone run with a home run to right field while Grace Pucciarelli suffered the loss in the circle.
Fredonia finished the all-star season with a 6-2 record and a fourth-place finish in the state championships.
Youth Baseball
Fredonia 11-12 Year-Olds Advance to Section 1 Semis
Fredonia 9, Auburn 5 - The Fredonia 11-12 year-old Little League all-star team advanced to the New York State Section 1 semifinals with its win over Auburn on Saturday.
Lucas Voss picked up the win on the mound while collecting four doubles at the plate. Seth Shrader had a pair of hits in the win while Jacob Green had a two-run homer and Noah Fleckenstein a triple.
Five pitchers combined on the hill, with Voss getting help from Reid Tarnowski, Derek Walters, Tyler Winchell and Jacob Tarnowski.
Fredonia will play Batavia at noon today, in Batavia. The game can be heard on WDOE.

Westfield One-Pitch Softball Tournament
The annual Westfield One-Pitch Slow Pitch Softball Tournament will be held Aug. 25, in Westfield, on the softball fields at NorthLake, Smith and Westfield Academy and Central School. Entry fees must be received by Aug. 23.
The tournament will follow a double-elimination format if there are more than 12 teams, and a round robin format if there are 12 teams or less, and each batter will start with a 3-2 count.
The entry fee is $250 per team, and will include a $1,000 payout for first place, $500 for second and $250 for third. Any proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Woody Keyser Fund.

2012 Men's Adult Basketball League
All teams interested in participating in the Dunkirk Recreation Men's Adult Basketball League, sponsored by the Dunkirk Recreation Department, should contact the Recreation Office at 366-9879 to register their team.
Should there be enough interest in filling a league, a meeting will be scheduled regarding league fees, rules and a starting date. The league is open to all area teams. Games will be played at the Wright Park basketball courts.
Rally for the Cure
Golf Tournament
There will be a "Rally for the Cure" golf tournament at Pinehurst Golf Course in Westfield on Saturday, July 21.
It is hosted by the Tuesday Evening Par Tee Girls League. The Susan G. Komen Foundation raises money each year to help with the research for the cure of breast cancer by sponsoring the "Rally for the Cure" Breast Cancer Golf Tournaments.
All the money raised through these tournaments goes toward research for a cure. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start for a two-person scramble. The registration fee is $20, which includes a years subscription to a magazine (four different magazines to choose from), a Rally for Cure magnetic ball marker, along with other goodies. A major prize will be awarded for a woman closest to the pin on a par-3 hole and also a major prize for a man closest to the pin on a par-3 hole, plus many other hole prizes and a Chinese auction. The tournament cost is $20 per person and does not cover golfing fees or cart. There will also be an optional lunch after a great morning of golfing.

The 2012 Randy Goss Memorial Golf Tournament
The 2012 Randy Goss Memorial Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Aug. 18, and will be held at Rosebrook Golf Course, in Silver Creek.
The tournament is a two-person scramble format, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $55 per person, which includes golf, cart, skins, closest to the pin on every hole, lunch, adult beverages, pop and dinner.
There will be a bus taking golfers from Dunkirk to the golf course. The tournament is limited to the first 72 golfers.

"Shoot the Lights Out" Basketball Camp for Boys and Girls at Fredonia State
Fredonia State will be hosting the 11th annual "Shoot the Lights Out" Basketball Camp this summer on the campus of Fredonia State University. The camp is for boys and girls entering grades 4th through 12th and will be held the week of July 16-20. The camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
The focus of the basketball camp will be shooting the basketball. Players will be taught the fundamentals of shooting including footwork, grip, release, follow through, shooting off the pass and dribble, 3-point shooting and free throw shooting. Campers get a free T-shirt and a free pizza party on the last day of camp and the cost for the week is $175 per person.

Walk-up registrations will be accepted starting at 9 a.m. on the first day of camp, however enrollment is limited to the first 150 registrants.
Fredonia Boys' Basketball Camp
The Fredonia Central School Boys' Basketball Camp will be held Monday, July 23 through Thursday, July 26 at the Fredonia High School and Middle School gymnasiums from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost for the Camp is $90. The camp is open to boys entering grades 3 through 12. All campers will receive a camp T-shirt.
Each athlete is expected to arrive between 8:30 and 9 a.m. The camp will start promptly at 9:30 a.m. Athletes are expected to bring their own lunch.

Inaugural Underclassmen Showcase
The Inaugural Underclassmen Showcase baseball and softball games, featuring Western New York sophomore and junior baseball and softball players, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, at North Collins Central Schools Sports Complex.
The baseball game will feature two icons of the WNY baseball world, longtime Orchard Park coach Bob Barrows and former Eden coach Bob Burnside, who will head the coaching staffs.
The softball game will pay tribute to former Williamsville South coach Gerry Gentner, who lost his courageous battle with cancer in January.
The showcase games will provide local baseball and softball players with exposure to college coaches from throughout the Northeast.
