RIPLEY - The Southwestern New York Association of Professional Photographers recently sponsored a photo contest as part of the Ripley Community Day. Organized by SNAPP's president and Ripley resident Stephanie Cunningham CPP, the event was open to amateur and semi-pro photographers in four categories.
"For our first time with an event on a local level, we were pleased with the number of entries registered," Cunningham said. "The talent in the community blew us away!"
Volunteering as print judges were past SNAPP/PPSNYS President Olen Seidler of Seidler Studio in Union City, Pa., and Mike Miller, owner of Portraits by Stephens in Erie, Pa. Also assisting as print handlers were Roy Newman of Newman Photography in Mayville, and Patti Biebel of Photography by Patti in Erie, Pa.. Scores and notes were scribed by Cunningham of Cunningham Photography in Ripley.
Mara Rubin of Westfield is shown with her winning SNAPP/Ripley Community Day Photo Contest entries.
Prints earned points based on impact, composition and technical skills for a maximum total score of 30 points. One print from each category's highest scores were chosen as the event's Best Of Show, earning the creator a cash prize as well as special ribbon.
Winners from the event were: Emily Bukowski of Mayville, Monochrome Traditional; Mara Rubin of Westfield scored two Best of Shows with her Color Creative and Color Traditional prints; and Margaret Spellman of Ripley won by default in the Monochrome Creative category.
"Ripley Community Day is the fundraiser for the Ripley Hose Company; SNAPP was pleased to be a part of their event and proud to donate $145 collected from registration fees back to the firemen," Cunningham said. "If there is enough interest in the community to keep this contest going, we may do it again next year."
