GOWANDA - Miles P. Gatens, age 89, formerly of Taylor Hollow Rd., passed away Wednesday July 25, 2012 at the Beikirch Care Center in Brockport where he and his wife Barbara have been convalescing
Miles was born March 17, 1923 in Waterloo, NY the son of Miles and Catherine (Murphy) Gatens.
Miles graduated from Ovid High School and as a young man played semi-pro baseball. In 1943, Miles enlisted with the United States Army Air Force. He served with the Eighth Air Force Aviation Ordinance in England loading bombs onto B-17s. Miles married the former Barbara J. Rees in Ovid, NY on Sept 6, 1947. He attended Ithaca College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy. Miles graduated from Ithaca in 1953. He did his internship in NYC. He was a Physical Therapist for the former Gowanda Psychiatric Center and had 35 years of state service prior to his retirement in 1983.
Miles and Barbara en-joyed traveling. They traveled all over the United States and Europe. Some of there fondest memories were trips to Cancun Mexico. The Gatens were long time active members of the First Presbyterian Church of Gowanda.
Besides his wife of nearly 65 years, Miles is survived by 2 daughters Michele (Ronald Fort) Gatens of Mechanicsville NY, Cheri (Jerry) Sheridan of Bergen, NY; and 5 grandchildren, Matt (Kim) and Caitlin Fort along with Chris, Jenny and Ben Sheridan. Miles had 3 sisters Julia Duffy, Jane Springsteen and Kathleen Facciponte.
Private graveside services are being held in the family plot of the Woodlawn Cemetery Elmira, NY.
