Lake is state’s responsibility

August 6, 2012
The OBSERVER

Editor, OBSERVER:

As a Chautauqua County resident and legislator, I am insulted by the fact that we are paying to clean up Chautauqua Lake.

The county is spending tens of thousands of dollars to make this happen. The problem with the spending is simply this: it is not Chautauqua County's property. This body of water belongs to New York state. It is their responsibility.

Why is Chautauqua County paying to fix a state problem?

I think what we are doing is against the law. The state has to take care of its property just like we do.

We have plenty of issues to address here locally. We also have to pay for unfunded mandates dictated by the state.

Chautauqua Lake is state property. The state needs to help be a part of the solution.

Sheridan
