Chautauqua County to hold household hazardous waste collection day

MAYVILLE - Chautauqua County Executive Gregory J. Edwards has announced the final Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day of 2012 will be Sept. 8 in Falconer.

The event is hosted by Chautauqua County's Division of Solid Waste and will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities Building on 454 N. Work St. in Falconer.

Among some of the items that will be accepted are transmission fluids, alkaline batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, non-empty aerosol cans, varnishes, stains, oil based paints, roofing tar, pool chemicals, and weed killers.

Electronics such as TVs, VCRs, DVD players, cable/satellite modems, computers, printers, fax machines, and cell phones will not be collected and can be recycled, free of charge, at the South, North, or West County Transfer Stations.

Waste motor oil will not be accepted and should be disposed of at any facility performing oil changes. Latex paint will not be taken and should be dried by mixing it with kitty litter and then disposing of it with household garbage.

Residents taking part in the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day must print out and complete a registration form that lists all the materials they are dropping off. The form should be submitted at the entrance of the Household Hazardous Waste Collection location and can be found online at www.co.chautauqua.ny.us/departments/dpf/landfill .
