Twenty years ago - 1992

The Great American Circus, sponsored by Child and Family Day Care Center, a part of Chautauqua Opportunities Inc., arrived today at Chautauqua County Fairgrounds in Dunkirk. Irene the elephant was the star of the first morning attraction - the raising of the big top. Other stars to appear will be Heather, Donna and Lisa, Irene's 2-year-old behemoth cousins, who are reported to be the last three baby elephants legally shipped out of Africa.

Thirty years ago - 1982

Purdy Ford Inc. of Gowanda has been selected as one of the nation's outstanding Ford dealerships and has received Ford's Distinguished Achievement Award. Howard A. Purdy is the owner and has been a Ford dealer in Gowanda since 1967, receiving this award eight times. The dealership is located on Route 62 in Gowanda.

Forty years ago - 1972

A full-size tee-pee, once the living quarters of David Gervase in the Chautauqua Gorge, is on display at the Fredonia Farm Festival.

Fifty years ago - 1962

Carl Orth, a top golfer in this area and twice club champion at Hillview and Shorewood, captured the coveted Western New York Hole-In-One Championship of Champions in Delaware Park, Buffalo.
