Upwards of 215 competitors took part in various events at the Second Annual Tri-Dunkirk this past weekend.
The Tri-Dunkirk consists of aquabike, duathlon, F1 intermediate, intermediate, sprint, relay intermediate and relay sprint triathlons.
The top male finisher in the aquabike was Orchard Park's Kenneth Newbury (1:46:33) while the top female finisher was Lyn Oberkrieser, of Buffalo. Oberkrieser finished in a time of 1:59:14.
The top male finisher in the duathlon was Jeffrey Gubala, of Tonawanda, who finished the race in a time of 1:17:03. In the female race, Melinda Lawson-Crabtree, of Frewsburg took the top spot in a time of 1:30:51.
Local finishers in the male race included James Kurgan (Dunkirk, 19th overall male, first overall in 55-59 age group, 2:32:16), Timmy Geiger (Fredonia, 13th overall male, third overall in 60-64 age group, 1:48:55), Randall Feinen (Forestville, 18th overall male, first in Clydesdale group, 2:16:50), Abigail Wesley (Gowanda, third overall female, first overall in 25-29 age group, 1:40:38), Denise Feinen (Forestville, sixth overall female, second overall in 45-49 age group, 1:54:52).
The top male finisher in the F-1 intermediate triathlon was Erie, Pa.'s Dan Pierce, who finished in a time of 4:11:50 while the top female finisher, Heather Patterson, of Clarence Center, finished in a time of 5:03:28.
In the intermediate triathlon, Sean Sullivan, of Kailua, HI, took top honors with his time of 1:59:19 while Theresa Berg (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), finished first in a time of 2:33:30.
Dunkirk's Pam Benchley was the only local competitor, coming in 16th overall in the female group while finishing fourth in the 45-49 age group, crossing the finish line in a time of 3:16:46.
Dallen Ashby was the top male finisher in the sprint triathlon. The Jamestown resident finished the course in a time of 1:03:32. The top female finisher was Jamestown's Cheryl Burns, who crossed the finished line in a time of 1:14:58.
Locals competing in the sprint triathlon included Rob Leary (Dunkirk, third overall male, first in 30-34 age group, 1:09:03), Christian Torres (Fredonia, 19th overall male, third in 20-24 age group, 1:21:50), Ray Szydlo (Fredonia, 42nd overall male, first in the 65-69 age group, 1:35:43) Paul Gavin (Dunkirk, 44th overall male, third in 45-49 age group, 1:35:53), Tricia Desantis (Silver Creek, eighth overall female, first overall in 40-44 age group, 1:22:12), Rachel Curtin (Fredonia, 18th overall female, third overall in 35-39 age group, 1:31:38), Kitty Crow (Fredonia, 31st overall female, fifth overall in 45-49 age group, 1:44:37), Elizabeth Szydlo (formerly of Fredonia, now living in Arlington, Va., 42nd overall female, fifth overall in 25-29 age group, 1:53:11), Judy Mowery (Fredonia, 46th overall female, first in 65-69 age group, 1:58:06), Jodi Korzenski (Dunkirk, 47th overall female, fourth overall in 40-44 age group, 1:58:54).
