An exhibition featuring the works of Virginia-based artist Paul Ryan will open at the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery at SUNY Fredonia on Friday with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m.
"On the hop: Paintings by Paul Ryan" will run through Sept. 26 in the gallery, which is located on the main level of Rockefeller Arts Center.
Ryan is professor of art at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. He also teaches critical theory in the MFA program of the Department of Painting and Printmaking in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is represented by Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Va. His paintings are in numerous public, corporate, and private collections.
“The camp under the moon,” is among the works by painter Paul Ryan, who will be featured in an exhibition at the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery at SUNY Fredonia from Aug. 31 to Sept. 26.
"I am delighted to welcome Paul Ryan to the Marion Art Gallery," Gallery Director Tina Hastings said. "Mr. Ryan and I have been working together for quite some time to bring his artwork to SUNY Fredonia. Much of the work in this exhibition is recent work that explores the 'dialectic of nature and culture' and while I have only experienced his work through digital images, I am looking forward to exploring the work in person in the gallery space.
Mr. Ryan will be participating in the Visiting Artist Program at the end of his exhibition. "On the hop" runs through Sept. 26.
"I am sure that Visual Arts and New Media students will benefit from the experience because Mr. Ryan approaches artwork not only as an artist but also a gallery director and a professor of critical theory," Mrs. Hastings said.
Gallery hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 2 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free and the gallery is open to the public.
